SPANKAPOO, or The Story of the Zooming Cockapoo

There was a time that Spanky was loved.  But bad things happen to good pooches, and after Spanky, an eight-year-old Cockapoo, had an injury that lost him the use of his hind legs, his guardian was diagnosed with terminal cancer, and she couldn’t care for herself, much less Spanky.By the time she surrendered him to the local shelter,  Spanky was in bad shape. He had burns from lying in his own waste, he couldn’t urinate – his bladder needed to be expressed – and he had open sores on his legs from dragging them behind him.And yet he still had a joyous, expectant look on his face, like he was ready for some love.  We had to rescue him.

At Muttville, Spanky was fitted with some wheels to take the place of his back legs.  It took all of two minutes for him to be jogging. After a few days he was taking corners on a dime, zooming around the place, and smiling at everybody he met.

He was staying at HQ for a while, until Ana came to meet some dogs to foster.  Ana is an outdoors person, and she wanted a dog that would enjoy the beach, the mountains, and hiking trails with her. Spanky did not seem like the obvious choice. But Ana saw that boundless spirit and took him home.

A little swimming therapy and some custom wheels, and Spanky was zooming around. And we do mean zooming.

“This guy is always happy, ALWAYS. He lives in the moment and that moment is always good.  He reminds me that obstacles are imaginary. He’s really taught me not to judge a book by its cover, because sometimes I’ll be very surprised at the story line.”

And now? “The specially-made skis are coming along nicely and hopefully they will be ready for the holiday season,” says Ana.

Spanky’s going cross-country skiing.

Still can’t quite picture this Superpup? Check out a little video put together from his foster family’s videos of his antics.

Wouldn’t you like that kind of joy in your life?  Spanky’s available for adoption!
