While Bonnie & Clyder were out on a field trip, vacationers from San Diego saw these two pups and it was love at first sight.
New beginnings for this bonded pair.

Fantastic news on this Friday! Haku is now offically adopted! For the past three months, Haku has charmed everyone he meets with his laid back, easy going, joyful way of life. On Tuesday, a couple visiting from Washington took him on a field trip & that sealed the deal. He will now be returning with them to his new home state of Washington. Aloha Haku!
A wonderfully happy tail for Lizzy!
We adopted this sweet baby just yesterday from the KHS! We learned about the field trip program from Marlana Schaefer
(Spinning Dolphin Designs in Hanalei), and we owe her so much for this opportunity! My husband and I were married just a week and a half ago on the north shore, and decided to do a KHS field trip for fun on our honeymoon. We fell head over heels in LOVE with Lizzy after taking her out, and she will be joining us and 2 other rescue dogs in Phoenix, AZ this Saturday! Thank you SO much for this wonderful program, and for supporting perfect dogs like Lizzy! We couldn’t have found our newly adopted child without you
This photo is from her first 5 minutes in the car with us.
Aloha Rocko! A family visiting Kauai from Alaska fell in love & decided to adopt Rocko. Rocko left yesterday for her new & colder, loving home in Alaska!
Guess who met his new forever family at my work yesterday?!? They adopted Clifford today and he will be flying back to the mainland with them this week!! He has a new doggy sibling waiting at home to meet him!Happy Day!

Another happy tail for a long time KHS resident! Josie, a 7 year old airedale mix, came to KHS in October 2013 as a stray with a large open wound on her side. We stitched her up and placed her up for adoption. During her time at KHS, she went on MANY field trips where she stole a lot of hearts with her spunky, fun loving personality. We are so happy to say that she just left the building with her new dad & she’ll be making her way to California at the end of the month with her new parents! Aloha Josie!
A lovely happy tail about Viv, now Hanalei, who was at KHS for 9 months until she found her new loving home with a visitor!
We are so happy that during our recent visit to Kauai we were able to adopt Viv/aka Hanalei. She was quite a trooper, tolerating 8 hours of flying and nearly constant time in her kennel. She was so good on the flights that people asked if she was drugged! Now we and our five other animals are loving her up good. Thank you for such a precious kitty – so sad she was at the shelter nearly nine months – thanks for saving her for us!

A wonderful happy tail that we just have to share! Anita & Lane are two 8 year old hound mixes who were surrendered by their owner along with two other dogs to KHS. Yesterday, a family visiting Kauai from California stopped in to do a field trip & chose Anita & Lane as their day partners. After spending the day with these two mellow sweethearts, they decided to adopt both of them!
Aloha Keshka! Keshka was found on the side of the road in November with injuries from possibly being hit by a car. Since then, she recovered nicely & has shown off her glowing personality on many field trips. Well, this was her lucky week when a family visiting from British Columbia chose Keshka for their field trip…they came back the next day & the one after that to take out Keshka & decided to adopt! As of yesterday, Keshka is now a Canadian. This is the family’s second KHS alum…they adopted from us a few years ago! And…they were willing to accompany 2 KHS puppies on their flight to Seattle so that the puppies could be transferred to Seattle Humane: The Humane Society for Seattle/King County
! Mahalo nui loa for adopting Keshka & offering your help to our Pet Transfer Program!
Way to go Keshka!
Happy Tails Imelda!A couple visiting Kauai from Washington stopped by to take a dog on a field trip last week…after walking through the kennels, they decided on Imelda, a stray who had been at KHS since November. During the field trip, Imelda showed off her affectionate personality & adorable underbite…so upon returning her to KHS, the couple adopted Imelda. The three left Kauai yesterday to start their journey as a family. Aloha Imelda!
Another KHS alum becomes a Canadian citizen! A couple visiting Kauai took Puka out on a field trip last week, then returned Saturday for another one. Puka showed off his loving, easy going personality…during the field trip, they were encouraging everyone they met to adopt him. Alas, he was meant to be with them…after thinking about it, they could not leave without him. Since we are closed on Sundays, the day of their flight, they rescheduled it for Monday with Puka joining them. Aloha Puka!

Fantastic news! News we’ve all been hoping for!! Treble, KHS’ longest resident has been adopted & is now on his way to his forever home in Canada!Treble came to us as a stray last January. Since then, he’s won the hearts of staff and many visitors who have taken him out on field trips. One such visitor, from Canada, was so bonded to Treble that when she returned home, she advocated Treble’s pictures & story on facebook. She could not personally adopt Treble because she owns a cat & Treble unfortunately has a high prey drive. So she advertised him to all of her friends. Well, one of her friends saw Treble & really felt he was the dog for their family. So what did they do? Well, they booked a flight to Kauai specifically to meet Treble!! So this week, Treble went out two days in a row on field trips with them & now is on his flight home. Our hearts are filled with joy! Mahalo for adopting & mahalo to Katie for advocating so strongly for a homeless dog!
Thank you Katie … you ROCK !!!
Way to go Treble !!!

Aloha Ali’i! A family visiting from Seattle decided to check our dogs available for adoption…the son’s one request was that they adopt a dog who has been here for a long time. Ali’i has been awaiting his forever home since July & met all of their other requirements. We couldn’t be happier!

Hoss is on his way to Alaska! His new parents were visiting the island last week & decided to take Hoss & his roommate out on a field trip. Hoss showed them that he’s actually a big teddy bear & sold them on the fact that he’d be a perfect addition to their family. Aloha Hoss!
We just received the sweetest email during this week of Thanksgiving…Tucker’s parents were visiting Kauai & decided to do a field trip…Tucker showed off his endearing personality & they fell in love. Tucker now lives in Texas with his new siblings.
From Tucker’s mom:
I just wanted to send you a quick note as we approach Thanksgiving and tell you how thankful we are that we stopped by your shelter when we were in Kauai on vacation. Admiral (we renamed him Tucker) is a GREAT dog! We had to potty train him, but he is extremely smart and learned quickly. He is wonderful with our 3 cats and daughter. He loves the dog park and never met a treat he didn’t like. He’s been a wonderful addition to our lives so far. I attached a couple of pictures for you. We wish you and the little critters all the best over the holidays.Mahalo to all KHS adopters!

|The Hawiian Prince That Fell Into Our Laps
In June 2013 we started looking for a lab that would join my boyfriend and I while we moved in together. We wanted a lab because we knew how loving and gentle they are and how they made wonderful best friends. We looked at East Bay SPCA’s website and saw Broma (his shelter name), a year and a half lab/greyhound that had came from Kauai; unfortunately he was on hold for another family.A week later my boyfriend took me to the East Bay SPCA to see if there were any new dogs that were avalible. While walking around we saw Broma again and he wasn’t on hold! While we played with him he was very shy and didn’t really want to play with us but wanted to play with the staff. We put him on hold because we liked him, but were on the fence about adopting him.
While at work, my boyfriend sent me a picture letting me know our new best friend had just entered our lives. I was so ecstatic. Broma, whose new name is Kona since being from Kauai, is the most polite and well-behaved dogs I have ever met. He loves chasing squirrels everywhere we go and he couldn’t be more happy than sleeping in bed with mom or wrestling with dad. He was well potty trained when we got him and is the most gentle dog. He does not bark or whine and loves to cuddle and lay his head on everyone. He was timid with playing with other dogs at first but now he loves running around the dog park with all sorts of dogs that can keep up with his greyhound lightening fast speed. Since we adopted Kona we have adopted two cats for my mom and sister and I am now looking to adopt another brother or sister for Kona.
Thank you East Bay SPCA SPCA for this wonderful best friend!
Your happy tail for today!
Grace, an 8 year old airedale mix, came to KHS as a stray in October. Last week, a couple visiting from CA took Grace & her roommate out for a field trip. It was pretty much love at first sight…Grace showed off her amazingly calm personality & easygoing attitude. However, they decided that it’d probably be too much to adopt and get Grace back to CA. The wife was purely heartbroken…so without telling her, the husband adopted Grace and booked her on their flight. Friday morning, we dropped off Grace at the airport while they were checking in for their flight & the wife was ecstatic! (and he made husband of the year
As you can see, Grace is adjusting very well to life in California!
Wonderful news! Visitors from CA took Rex out earlier this week on a field trip…well, anyone who has met this sweet guy is instantly smitten! And, so were they! Today, a few hours before their flight, they adopted Rex into their family. After two months at KHS, Rex is headed home & we are very happy for him!

Aloha Lucy! Lucy, a super sweet hound mix, came to us as a stray a few months ago with her 2 puppies. She won everyone’s heart with her amazing temperament! Lucy is now on her way to Seattle with her new parents who also adopted a kitten from KHS one year ago while on vacation. While on their honeymoon this week, they fell in love with Lucy! Happy trails Lucy!

Tuesday’s Happy Tail!A few weeks ago, when Jen & her family were visiting Kauai from Yukon, Canada they decided to participate in our field trip program. They chose Lono, a 1 year old lab mix for their outing. Lono, a stray who’d been with us for a few months, showed off his charming personality & great temperament. It was easy to fall in love, but they weren’t quite ready to adopt. Upon returning home & tying up some loose ends, Jen contacted us about adopting Lono…we knew it’d be a long trek, but together we made it work! Even after being denied by some airlines because of Lono’s large crate size, the family was still determined to get him home! Lono took a flight to Seattle where Jen’s daughter met him, then they took 2 flights to make it farther north. Lono has made himself right at home & is a great addition to the family!
Another happy tail for you! Aloha Maddie!Maddie, came to KHS as a stray 4 months ago & is now on her way to Los Angeles! Her new parents were visiting Kauai & took Maddie out on a field trip…they came back saying she is the perfect dog! After returning to LA, they decided to adopt Maddie…after lots of struggles to make flight arrangements, Maddie is now on her way home…where she’ll be greeted with lots of pink & a new doggie sibling.
Remember Maddie from last week? Well, here she is at her new forever home in LA…doesn’t she look right at home?!
While on their honeymoon, Taci & Nic, decided to take a dog out on a field trip. Moose caught their eye & it was love at first sight…they returned each day asking to take him out once more while asking more about the adoption process. Well, this former stray who spent 2 months at KHS, is currently on a plane to Santa Cruz, CA with his new mom & dad!
Aloha Claire! From Kauai to Alaska…Claire is on her way to her forever home!Yesterday, Damar & Kelly decided to Claire, a stray who came to us 1 month ago, out for a field trip yesterday while on vacation. Within two hours of the field trip, they called us to ask about the adoption process! Claire is now headed home to Anchorage with her mom & dad…there she will be greeted by 3 doggie brothers. Aloha Claire!

What happens when major dog lovers and awesome Copper’s Dream fosters go to Kauai to celebrate their anniversary? They spend some time volunteering at the Kauai Humane Society and take a special scruffy out on a field trip! This special scruffy (a 3-year old medium sized terrier/Airedale mix), who’ve they named Lucky, is about to get a whole lot luckier. He’s hitching a ride back to the mainland today to become a Copper’s Dream pup, fostered by none other than his field trip buddies. While we focus our rescue efforts in California, a life saved is a life saved. Besides, who can resist a little Aloha spirit?
We’d like to give a big mahalo to Outfitters Kauai for encouraging their guests to take a KHS dog out on a field trip! A few weeks ago, a family from San Diego learned about the field trip program from Outfitters Kauai staff while on a ziplining adventure. The family decided to check it out & selected Frida, a 5 year old poodle mix for their outing. Well, she stole their hearts with her well mannered behavior…after returning to CA, they contacted us & decided to adopt! Frida flew to San Diego yesterday & is already nicely settled in as you can see below! Mahalo to our adopters & our supporters at Outfitters Kauai!
Happy Tail for Thursday! Lani, a 6 year old hound mix, came to us as an owner surrender in March. Everyone at KHS loved Lani as she was so easygoing, housebroken, and calm! However, she sat her for 5 months & was never adopted so we decided to transfer her to East Bay SPCA in California where there are many more potential adopters. We recruit people willing to escort our transfer dogs back to the mainland on their flight on Alaska Airlines. Dan & Libby volunteered not only to let a dog fly with them to CA, but to drop the dog off at the shelter the next day. Well…that’s all it took! One night with Lani & they were sold! After being processed at East Bay SPCA, they adopted her! Here she is soaking up her dad’s love. Mahalo Dan & Libby for seeing Lani’s sweet soul!
Kala is now in his loving forever home in the bay area due to our Pet Transfer Program. Kala came to KHS in November 2012, months went by & no one looked at him. After four month here, he was transferred in March 2013 to East Bay SPCA in Oakland. Kala’s time at EBSPCA was very brief & was adopted into a very loving forever home!! We couldn’t be happier! We just heard from his (now Archer) parents with this fabulous update:In late March, my husband and I adopted a 3-year-old airedale mix named Kala, he came from Kauai in the pet transfer program. We renamed him Archer and he’s been a perfect addition to our family. I want to personally thank you for the pet transfer program that allowed us to find him!We enjoy taking him for long walks, trips to the dog park, and his new favorite place: Fort Funston beach. He is so smart and inquisitive. He also hates water and getting his paws wet (confusing since he came from an island!)Archer makes even the non-dog lovers in our family melt. He is so very loving and personable. Kids walk by him on the street and get so excited to pet him, and he is always gentle with them. I work as a librarian for a small private high school and occasionally I take him in to work. He gets so much love from the students that on a recent survey, the students said he was one of their favorite parts about our summer school program. My husband and I joke that we hit the shelter dog lottery with him.
Aloha Sienna! Sienna’s new parents were visiting from Tennessee & just couldn’t resist Sienna’s adorable charm! Now, the three of them are headed back to Tennessee to settle in as a family. Mahalo nui loa for adopting from Kauai Humane Society!
Scarlet (formerly Aloha) flew to her new forever home in Denver on Saturday. Her parents met her while on vacationing on Kauai & fell in love! They said that Scarlet is a sweetheart & she is already following her new sister Buffy around the yard and house. Her dog siblings acted as if Scarlet had always been a part of the family, sniffing each other and showing no aggression whatsoever. Aloha Scarlet! Mahalo nui loa for giving her an amazing furever home!
Look at Zena (formerly Zenya) now! Zena came in as a stray at the beginning of the year & spent two months at KHS. Then, she was transferred to Oregon Humane Society where she was very quickly adopted! Zena now lives on 2.5 acres in Portland & her parents recently visited us on a trip to Kauai to see where she started her journey. Mahalo for adopting!
Aloha Tangerine! As we type, she is on the plane with her new parents…headed to Seattle! They took sweet, easygoing Tangerine out for a field trip & it was instant love! Two days later, she’s leaving Kauai with them. Mahalo nui loa for adopting!
“She is being trained as a search and rescue dog for the Fresno Sheriffs Department!”
Happy Tail for Tuesday! Look at these happy hounds! Koa & Ipo were found starving & abandoned by a Colorado couple visiting Kauai. Before leaving the island, the couple came by to see if either had been claimed…which they had not. So they decided to adopt both of them & fly them to their new forever home in Colorado last Saturday! Looks like they’re adjusting well & loving every minute of it! Mahalo for adopting!
Another KHS happy tail for you! After reading about our Pet Transfer Program in the San Francisco Chronicle, bay area resident, Joyce wanted to help out. She and her brother decided to book a trip to Kauai solely to be able to escort a shelter dog to the mainland. While here, Joyce & her brother also, decided to use their time helping KHS dogs. Every day, they took Kiko and Wolfgang for a field trip…exposing them to many potential adopters and getting them tired out. On their last day here, they decided to adopt Wolfgang! So they escorted a dog to Oakland to be placed up for adoption and gave Wolfgang his new forever home. A big mahalo to both of these amazing supporters!
Another happy tail for you! Snickers, who had been with us since he was a tiny 6 week old puppy went home on Friday. Home to Alberta, Canada! His new family met him at the KCC farmer’s market a few weeks ago & it was love at first sight. He flew to Seattle on Friday where his new family drove 16 hours to meet him! Mahalo to these wonderful adopters! Snickers had spent 5 months here waiting for his forever home.
Awesome update!! Hana has been adopted & will be flying to her new family in Ohio on Monday. She will be joining another KHS alum…her family visited Kauai in March, found a stray dog, and adopted her after she wasn’t claimed by an owner. Hana’s sister will have to teach her how she adjusted to the cold weather & what those funny little things are they call squirrels! We are over the moon for Hana!! It’s been a long time coming!
Daisy, formerly Lilac, at her new forever home in Iowa! Her parents took her on a field trip while on vacation & fell in love. Hope she has a winter coat!
Happy Hoku at home in Chicago! Hoku, a 4 year old pointer mix, came to us as an owner surrender in late August…he was a very well behaved, mannerly fellow. He stayed with us for 2.5 months before he stole his new mom’s heart! She was visiting from Chicago & had been looking for a dog for a while…she met Hoku & fell in love! Hoku flew to Chicago last week & has settled in nicely with his new mom & dog sibling!
A kitty story…
Sammii is headed home to California with her new parents! Thank you for adopting! Aloha Sammii!
Luna was found wandering in Koke’e State Park by a couple visiting from Atlanta. They brought her in to our shelter, but after 7 days no one claimed her and she was placed up for adoption. After returning home to Georgia, the couple asked if she was still here and decided to proceed with an adoption. Well, here she is…at home with her new parents and three cat siblings!
We just said a joyful goodbye to Buddy who is making his journey to his parents in Toronto! Buddy’s previous owner had him for 8 years (since he was a puppy), but could no longer care for him. He was surrendered at the beginning of September to our shelter. Buddy is an AMAZING dog…housebroken, calm, and loves children. At the end of September, a couple from Toronto decided to volunteer with us during their vacation and took Buddy out on a field trip. The next day, they returned to take him on a second field trip! At the end of the day, they expressed interest in adopting, but decided to think about it for a week. Well, it’s official… he is becoming a Canadian citizen! We couldn’t be happier for Buddy to share the rest of his life with this loving couple!
HOW YOU CAN HELP…
Aloha! We are looking for help from some of our mainland supporters in the Oakland area. Currently, we transfer some of our adorable dogs to East Bay SPCA in Oakland & Dublin to be placed up for adoption. Our dogs are usually adopted within 3-5 days at their facility, however, at KHS, they may spend months looking for a forever home.Currently, we are hoping to recruit volunteers who are willing to help with this transfer process. What is needed: pickup 1 dog at 10pm from Oakland airport, keep overnight, then drop off at the Oakland or Dublin facility the next morning. We are looking for people who are comfortable & familiar with handling medium/large dogs. It’s a very rewarding way to help a dog on his way to find his new forever home! Kuger, below spent 4 months at KHS, once transferred to EBSPCA, he was adopted within the week!
If you can help, please email MightyDog Shasta at: firstname.lastname@example.org
